What was an AIM buddy icon?
A buddy icon was the small picture that appeared with an AOL Instant Messenger screen name. AIM 3.0 introduced the feature in 1999; people used still images and animated GIFs to signal a mood, fandom, joke, relationship, or version of themselves.
Are these the original files?
The download button serves the exact validated bytes stored by the archive. Original means the archive has not resized or converted that stored file; it does not mean this is the first copy ever posted.
Why are there duplicates?
Copying was part of how buddy icons traveled. Exact matches add source history without storing the bytes twice, while resized, recompressed, recolored, or differently animated copies remain preserved as variants. The main wall shows one canonical copy from each known family.
Why are some descriptions or tags wrong or missing?
Because nearly half a million tiny, frequently animated, contextless images are an unreasonable cataloging assignment. Descriptions are machine-assisted and kept separate from original source evidence, so they can be corrected as the tools improve. Found a mistake? Send a correction.
May I reuse an icon?
The archive preserves files; it does not grant a new license to them. Rights may belong to the artist, a media owner, or another creator. Check the source record and obtain whatever permission your use requires.
How do I contribute a collection?
Open the contribution desk. You can send a website or Wayback link, loose images, a folder, one ZIP, or details about a larger or unusual collection so I can arrange the next step.
Why is some material hidden by default?
Sensitive material remains preserved but is not shown automatically in the public gallery. The complete preservation download is unfiltered and carries a content warning.
Can I download the archive?
Yes. The download page provides a normal ZIP containing a BagIt preservation package, SHA-256 checksums, machine-readable metadata, and immutable incremental updates.
How do I report an incorrect description or rights concern?
Use the contact form. Include the icon’s permanent page URL and any evidence or context that will help me review the record.
