Read the short historyRecovered from the early web
Buddy icons survive in old directories, fan sites, downloadable packs, and web archives. The archive preserves the original files, groups known copies, and records where each one was found.
How the archive worksEarly Digital buddy icons combine nostalgic pixel rendering with message-style text, often combining names, love notes, and short phrases near simple scenes or people. Green terminal imagery, flat figures, and straightforward color blocks make the subject feel like early chat icons.
