Buddy icons survive in old directories, fan sites, downloadable packs, and web archives. The archive preserves the original files, groups known copies, and records where each one was found.
How the archive worksEarly 2000s Digital Art identifies a legacy chat-era aesthetic with compact cartoon faces, bright pixel blocks, simple effects, and stylized text placement reminiscent of older online buddies. In these icons, oversized eyes, tight framing, and direct captions often work together as the signature visual language.
