Buddy icons survive in old directories, fan sites, downloadable packs, and web archives. The archive preserves the original files, groups known copies, and records where each one was found.
How the archive worksAbstract Shapes describes non-literal buddy icon designs where patterns, blobs, loops, and symbolic forms create the subject instead of a direct scene. In these icons, rotated curves, repeated orientations, and shape variation carry interest more than a realistic character or setting.
